Supporting Those Who Serve Behind the Scenes: Our Military Spouse Weaving Program

We see them every day—the headlines that tell us more service members are being deployed.

But what we don’t often see is that there’s a hidden story behind every deployment. A family adjusting at home. Children trying to make sense of distance and change. A spouse doing her best to manage all the practical and emotional responsibilities of running a home—all on her own.

And while Military Spouse Appreciation Day gives us a meaningful moment to pause and recognize that reality, the truth is these stories don’t belong to a single day on the calendar. Military spouses carry this weight all year long, and they deserve to be seen and supported all year long, too.

What Military Spouses Sacrifice

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes for military families in our country?

The reality is that they are facing many silent battles. These families have to move across the country (or even abroad) every few years, starting over with new schools, new communities, and new jobs. This turbulent lifestyle can lead to challenges such as:

  • Struggling to maintain a traditional career – The constant restart these families face can lead to gaps in employment for military spouses, making it difficult to build or sustain long-term career growth.

  • Lack of a consistent support network – Frequent relocations often mean being far from established family and friends, making it harder to rely on a steady local support system.

  • Parenting responsibilities carried alone for long stretches – If you’re a parent, you’ve likely had days where you wish your spouse could get home earlier to help with the house and kids. For military spouses, those stretches can last weeks or months at a time, requiring them to manage the full weight of home and family life independently.

Despite these challenges, military spouses remain incredibly resilient. Their strength and determination show up day after day, even in the face of constant change. And while they carry so much with grace, they shouldn’t have to carry it alone. They deserve the support of a country that’s willing to step in and say, “We see you and we’re standing with you.”

Our Military Spouse Weaving Program

These are just a few of the reasons that meaningful work opportunities matter so much to them.

I came to understand personally a small peek into this during a season of life when a career shift empowered me to care for my mother as her health was declining. That experience taught me firsthand how powerful it is to have work that adapts to your life and allows you to show up for your family the way you need to.

Not long after, I was having dinner with my son, who serves as an Air Force pilot, and his wife.

As we talked, I listened to his wife share pieces of their life—how often things shift, how plans can change without much notice, and how you learn to adjust quickly and keep going.

Sitting with her, something became really clear to me: one of the greatest gifts we can give these women is the opportunity to contribute to their family’s financial stability in a way that truly makes sense with their day-to-day life responsibilities.

That’s why the Military Spouse Weaving Program was created. The program offers military spouses free training, earning potential, and the opportunity for a flexible at-home work schedule.

Meet Our Weavers

Privacy is paramount for military families, so we don’t share identifying details about the individuals we employ. But what we can share are stories—glimpses into what life looks like for many of the women we work with.

In one woman’s story, her husband is thousands of miles away, serving on a submarine. At home, she’s raising their kids, three girls, balancing school drop-offs, bedtime routines, and the long stretches of silence when communication isn’t possible.

In the quiet moments, she weaves.

She’s always been creative. Knitting and weaving give her a calm rhythm in the middle of a full, on-the-go life. Between sports practices and family time, she finds peace in the process.

This work gives her more than a paycheck. It gives her a way to provide for her family on her own terms. Flexibility. Stability. A sense of purpose when life feels uncertain.

Every bracelet she makes carries not just wood or the material it’s made with, but her resilience, strength, and love for her family.

For another weaver, being part of the Stonington Designs team means more than working from home. It means showing her daughter what’s possible.

Her little girl has watched her earn money through creativity, craftsmanship, and community. And now? She wants in.

This mother has been teaching her daughter how to do the little drills for our handwoven necklaces. These tiny, meaningful steps help bring our designs to life.

The daughter helps to bag weaving kits for our military spouse artisan weavers, and she even adds her own creative spin to the kits. She is also learning how to design her own jewelry! And just like that, it has become a multigenerational family business.

Another weaver we work with is bravely walking through a season of uncertainty.

It was only supposed to be nine days. That’s what they told the kids.

But nine days turned into three weeks—no clear updates, no real timeline. Because of national security, there are things she simply doesn’t get to know.

So she keeps going. Answering the questions at home:

“What does Daddy do for the Air Force?”
Why they might have to move again.
Why Dad isn’t here right now.

She faces invisible battles:

Like showing up to the parent-teacher conference solo.

Handling the bedtime routine and the broken dishwasher.

Celebrating milestones without the one who should be home.

Holding everything steady, even when it doesn’t feel that way. And quietly carrying all the moments he’s missing, too.

These stories are just a few examples of the daily challenges military spouses face. You and I may not be able to step in and carry their burden for them. But what we can do is support their access to meaningful, flexible work. In a world where these women are constantly being asked to adapt to the demands of their shifting circumstances, what a special gift it is when we adapt to them.
